It s often used in heat exchangers and furnaces. When frequent thermal cycling is involved the alloy is resistant to about 1850 f. Type 309s stainless steel is identical to type 309 except for a lower carbon content that minimizes carbide precipitation and improves weldability. Cold working 309 will increase both strength and hardness and this stainless steel does not respond to heat treating.
However 309 has superior corrosion resistance and strength. Often used in heat exchangers and furnaces this material maintains its corrosion resistance up to the maximum temperature.
