2x4 Truss Attic Storage
Finally make sure stored items are securely locked in place.
2x4 truss attic storage. A regular common truss with a 24 foot span and a 10 12 roof pitch with no storage space costs 69 in my market at this time. From what i ve been reading the trusses are not designed to support storage and i need to get a structural engineer s on site opinion as to what all needs done. If you want a full blown attic truss with a room the cost of a single truss is just 158. Unfortunately my home builder had framed out the attic using a common truss system utilizing 2x4 s see attached picture of exact type although my roof is much steeper and no middle non bearing wall below.
Reinforcing garage attic trusses for storage area i have an attic above my two car garage that i have been using as a storage area. This goes for manufactured roof trusses the kind assembled with metal gussets if you have traditional site built roof framing your storage capacity depends on the design of the framing. I m going to put down some osb in a small 4x8 spanning three bottom chords section of the warren style 2x4 trussed 24 oc attic in my townhome. There are several reasons for this.
Your attic is not suitable for storage because the bottom member of a typical truss referred to as a cord is not designed to support a storage load not because of truss movement. Originally i just put loose boards down over the horizontal 2x4 base of the trusses. First adding weight to the top of the bottom 2 4 that makes up the truss is a big no no. To make the area more useable and secure now i want to put in 5 8 plywood over those 2x4s.
If the roof structure of your home was designed with prefabricated trusses your attic was definitely not designed for any storage. Some roofs are framed with special storage trusses that leave an open central space suitable for storage.
